GFUG (Glowforge User's Group) gatherings

Yeah, cultural population density at work. Totally doesn’t surprise me. Ontario (and eastward) were the founding provinces, after all. Also doesn’t surprise me that Vancouver is quite Glowforge-rich.

Is it that technology companies in the NorthWest US and the entertainment industry are very popular in SouthWest Canada?

Pardon my cultural understandings of the diversity in Canada. :books:

That’s as good a reason as anything.

  • Vancouver is commonly considered one of the best places in the world to live. The natural splendor of the country in that area is just plain beautiful, but it’s also a very major seaport for stuff coming in. Cost of living can be very high, though.
  • Toronto is the most populous Canadian city. Also a major import/export city, and of course, fashion city.
  • Winnipeg is pretty much smack in the middle of the country, which makes it good for transport to both ends of the country. My understanding is that’s why it’s so attractive for business. I’ve never lived there, so I can’t comment much about life there.
  • Just outside of Edmonton was where they first found significant oil in Alberta, which pretty much turned the provincial path from farming into a resource province within a few decades, if not years (this was 1947).
  • Calgary got popular because it looked nicer than Edmonton, was closer to the US border, and so a bunch of companies moved or set up their head offices there. Calgary used to be mostly cowboys. They have tasty steak, but their hockey team sucks.

That last point may or may not be true. Edmonton and Calgary have a friendly but bitter rivalry.

Yeah, everyone knows the steaks in Edmonton are better

Tell me about it. It’s cheaper for me to fly to Greenland than Vancouver. lol

Okay, I’ll bite…

Greenland is calling why? :confounded:

Yeah, I feel for ya. Winnipeg really hasn’t focused on being an airline hub. I think the only reason Edmonton and Calgary gets off so cheap is because airlines like having a hub near where they can get a good supply of jet fuel. lol

But hey, you can always hop on a train!

Haha, yeah, I thought things were gonna change after we got our new airport… But alas…

I just might know the sub shop you got it from. We tried it and didn’t like it much, we found a Chinese place that delivers and is pretty good (except that the General Tso’s is always fairly bland and doesn’t have the kick that I’m used to)

Utah is certainly quite the hike

Love good TSO’s, so hard to find :disappointed:

All this talk of UGs makes me wonder about the many SF bay area GFs. I feel a little dumb here, but I can’t seem to add my little GF logo to the map where I live in SW San Jose, CA. ?? - Rich

Pretty good pile of 'em in the Bay Area. Four of us in the Sacramento area. I would consider hosting a Lightsmith get-together at my shop in Woodland.

I would come. I love that area. When I open the map I don’t get those options at the top of the map. I guess that is my problem. hmmm. - Rich

You may need to be logged into google?

When you go to the Glowforge Map, sign in with your Google Account (or for those who have more than one GMail account, the one you prefer).

Once than has happened, you get the editing tools:

Select Edit and the tools look like:

Zoom in to your neighborhood

Select the Marker (to the right of the Hand), position the crosshairs where you want to put the icon and label the point (changing the default “Point ###” with what you want it called) and use the lower box to put additional information.

Once you have Saved it, log out of your Google account.

wow thank you for the step by step there. I’m sure that will help a bunch of people.

Also if anyone wants to narrow your area you can search for a city/state/country/address before placing the point.

also I regularly search for just Texas to see who is “near” me.

A Northern VA gal here. Would love to convene after we get our machines.
