I’m looking for somewhere to get stuff like cherry, maple, and walnut… 1/16" thick… And satin finished, kind of like the Proofgrade wood finish.
It could be solid hardwood or MDF + veneer, as long as the wood exterior looks nice.
Stain options would be cool.
Colorado Heirloom has the right kind of thing but a long lead time and a $100 minimum order. It also says you must be a wholesale customer, which I think I can actually do, but I don’t want to if I don’t have to.
I can do all the finishing steps myself if I have to… But this is a small experiment in making earrings and I am perfectly happy to pay bit of a premium to get a sheet of something nice if it saves me labor.
Yeah, the 1/16 Birch he shared is good, but would need to be finished for something like earrings. It only takes minutes of total effort, although spread over a longer time for coats of your preferred finish to dry between coats and final sanding. I use Minwax water-based poly-u for the most part, and it soaks in nicely and sands cleanly. I could do a full sheet in less than 10 minutes total time, but again, spread over a few hours…
Yeah, it may be that my dreams of pre-finished sheets for a few extra bucks are futile. But I knew if I could get help finding that anywhere, it would be here.
If I had a sales pipeline then buying $100+ of stuff from Colorado Heirloom and doing the tax stuff would be fine – but I am just dabbling.
(A friend of mine showed me some obviously laser cut earrings she got on Etsy for $25 and just because I feel like they are overpriced I want to design some of my own, haha… I bet some of you know that feeling. Also I have been looking for an excuse to play with abalone inlay.)
Whelp, the pre-finished part is definitely the deal killer for any suggestions, but if you are interested in a source for 1/16" ply, have you seen Smokey Hill Designs? Most of their product is actually aimed at earring makers. Here is a link for the thin plywood: 1/16” Plywood – Smokey Hill Designs
