Another thing I see in that image is an LPI that is way too low. if you are seeing horizontal and vertical lines unrelated to the wood grain then those are in the spacing between those lines.

That most recent Acrylic stuff was at 1355 LPI and the speed increased to compensate as wood grain can cover for some cases. However to engrave at very high LPI the speed must be increased to compensate as full power is still most desirable to suppress grain issues in wood.

The thicker the wood the more pronounced the carving so 1/4" thick is pretty basic, and the larger the piece the less effect the thickness has.
