You could add the side cutouts that look like upside down oblong “U” shape if you make the de-slatted version.

And I would recommend for them to be unsealed for this reason. That’s why a lot of coasters are sandstone and that type of material. I agree with you, there is probably not enough room for a drop to form before it soaks in.
