Just saw recently that someone commented that the fireworks in LA were heavy this year (and naturally, I can’t find it now, otherwise I would link to it directly), but this is absolutely gorgeous by drone…you guys will want to see it.
Great job folks! We didn’t have near that level of boom-boom! (Ours ran on until about 2:00 am though…definitely gonna be some napping this afternoon.)
Thanks–no formal displays here (there’s been an organized event off the bridge I am 1/4 mile from the prior 3 years), we just weeks of random bangs & booms, an increase Fri night and started again 10am Sat, then the visual stuff started about 7pm–so over 5 hours near constant stuff as folks in the area setting off (mostly) illegal stuff they got on the reservations & some quite nice to see.
Was the first time I’ve actually felt more anxious than my cat & couldn’t wait for it to end! (fortunately it quieted down soon after midnight…).
Yeah, this year was definitely unique. My wife talked me into taking the kids over to friends house to watch them and their neighbors light fireworks.
The drive (a short distance, only a few minutes) was already like a war zone, people started early! And once the sun went down, it was absolutely crazy!! I have never been scared of fireworks before. But, last night, I just wanted to get home and make sure nothing burned down.
We got a pass on that problem. Right after dinner we had a frog downer that lasted for a good hour, and then again about 11.
Nothing was going to burn in all that soggy.
My side of the island was relatively quiet, I was pretty disappointed. The businesses that have done it decided not to do them for social distancing reasons I’m guessing. That and the people here are sort of against American independence
Edit: Should note that fireworks aren’t legal, either, but for new year’s, the entire island lights up. It really is just the 4th that is a letdown.
There are fireworks stores here open year-round. Twenty within ~20-minutes drive just in my corner of the city! The one my ex used to stock her battery said they are doing really well. 'Murica!
I truly believe with all my heart and soul every redneck, hillbilly, good olé boy and man in our neighborhood spends his mortgage payment on fireworks. Every year for the last 21 years it starts about 7:30 and finishes at midnight.
For the last 5 years New Year’s Eve, Labor Day and Halloween have been included.
Kind of feel like when the local, state, and federal governments put on a public fireworks display it is a celebration of Independence day. Just feels that way. When I or my neighbors do it, we’re just playing with boy toys. Boom! Cool, did you see that watermelon just explode?
That’s cool and disturbing all at once. [One of my friends who is a surgeon said it was a particularly bad year for fireworks-related injuries at her hospital.]
Boston fireworks were cancelled and fireworks are illegal here in MA for personal use. We had a lot of people in the neighborhood setting things off, but I’m sure it was nothing compared to what others experienced.
I didn’t miss it this year. We were busy watching Hamilton and enjoying Chinese food.
My husband and I are members of a private shooting range. One of the members is a watermelon farmer. Every summer he drops off a truckload of watermelons.
All the men get so excited to blow up the watermelons with their ARs, AKs and Dirty Harry pistols.
I take my watermelon and draw a picture on it. I use a Sharpie for the design. I will shoot my watermelon with a 22.
We planned on flying home and spending the 4th with family, because my wife’s hometown legitimately feels like being in The Sandlot during this time of year, but with covid numbers on the rise, and Hawaii having a mandatory 14 day quarantine after travel (until August 1st, then you can get tested and be let off the hook), we just stayed here. Did bbq on the beach, though, so it was still a good day!
Firework go off in my part of town starting about the middle of May and continues until August. It peaks on the 4th when they add a few thousand gun shots. We have one young dog who is really upset by it and I hate it, but I know that’s nothing compared to the folks who suffer PTSD and feel like they’re back in a war zone every single night.
That LA fireworks thing was awesome to see. And awesome to think that the city said “NO FIREWORKS ON THE FOURTH OF JULY OR YOU CAN GET 50,000 DOLLAR FINE!!!” and collectively the population of the city went “oh really? Bring it.” and fired them off anyway. Good for them.
