And tonight we "squeeeeeee"! 😊

Totally excited.

Don’t know if folks saw this interesting tie in, but he’s actually related to Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle! http://theweek.com/speedreads/670402/sherlock-actor-benedict-cumberbatch-related-arthur-conan-doyle-researchers-discover

Nuh-Uuhhhh! What are the odds??? (Cool!) :sunglasses:

Desperate, too! It seems like there is just a huge gulf in quality between domestic (US) and foreign programming, IMHO. Sherlock (and plethora of other British, Norwegian, Swedish, etc. shows) led to a lack of enthusiasm for domestic programming.

One of our favorite shows (mini-series)! Stupid DVR glitches last night and missed the first airing. thankfully I checked as was able to set it to record again (2nd time). so we will get to watch tonight.

Last night’s episode made me think they’re reaching the end of the creative line. Not sure if you’ve seen any of the tweets from Moffat, etc. He said they killed off a character and claimed they’re doing it to maintain consistency with the Doyle canon. But they add babies and multiple death/return to life scenarios without regard to their lack of support in the ā€œcanonā€.

Killing a major character off is one of the things TV does as a show starts to run down. Wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of bromance focus next.

Who believes a hot girl stumbles onto a guy in the street and then unprompted gives him her phone number but not her name? Is the subsequent texting the least bit believable - happily married & devoted husband is supposed to be led into temptation because he found out something he a) should have suspected given his wife’s background and b) overtly decided not to learn about when she originally gave him the opportunity to learn it all when he burned it when she gave it to him? Seriously, now he wakes up and decides her history is all lies? He didn’t want to know that history. Said it didn’t matter and it was all behind them. But now they have a thread for a burgeoning romance that otherwise would have been totally out of character instead of merely somewhat.

The last scene’s Sherlock performance was mean & vindictive and totally out of character for Sherlock. It was just a cheesy ploy to create the stage for what followed.

Irritated. Complex storyline that devolves in the end to hackneyed story telling.

Yeah…
knew this was coming, it had to, and they handled it well. But i do agree that they are winding it down…not because they lack ideas, but because the two main stars have gotten so ā€œin-demandā€ that they can’t shoot on the same schedule any more. Did you notice they didn’t have a lot of scenes together in this one, and it made things feel…choppier? It was still quite entertaining, but the chemistry between the two main characters is what drives the story. It was sad, but we knew it had to happen. I’m surprised they managed a season 4.

Oh well,
two more to go and then we find something else to do. (Maybe something involving lasers.) :relaxed:

No spoilers in the thread. Everyone’s been good - including the folks who have seen the entire season on the BBC already :slightly_smiling_face:

I think there might be more to it…

Me too. It’s just a lame setup. No imagination and requires someone to then act totally out of character.

Your definition of ā€œspoilerā€ is very, very different than mine. :rage:

I got a completely different take on it when I saw it…watch it…it’s totally worth seeing. :relaxed:

(And I’m not giving any more on it because some of you guys haven’t seen it yet…so hurry up, it’s killing me to not discuss the plot points with some of my intelligent co-viewers.)

We’re about to cue it up on the DVR…

Good thing there’s a ā€œhide spoilerā€ function in Discourse!

I always like Sherlock. However, I think the idea of having John have a sudo-affair was sort of a cheap way to ramp up the crisis with his wife’s death. If it didn’t feel completely out of character it would have worked better, or, for me, if they had shown more stress in the marriage that led him to not throw the number away, which I think his character normally would have, then I could have gone for it. But as it was it felt very forced for me. Still enjoyed it and looking forward to what will probably be the last two (at least for a very long time.

Ahhhh, but you see…

The end result was we see that John is not the perfect goody-two shoes that he has appeared to be…he is subject to human failings like everyone else…he grew weary of being a full-time father (a totally demanding task to be sure) and grew tired of being overlooked in favor of his wife, who was working more with his best buddy than he was…so he slipped. (At least it was just flirty texting…I didn’t get affair out of that…I’d need to watch it again to be sure.) Granted it was a little bit clumsy, but there’s only so much you can do in a 90 minute episode.

We also see Sherlock, who has always prided himself on avoiding the pitfalls of emotion start to show some of his - so he is slipping up as well. Both of them are being humanized, with heroism and faults in equal measure.

I actually like it - it gives the characters depth, and they’ve been building up to it over the last couple of seasons. Mary’s death was inevitable - in the Conan Doyle books John is a widower, living with Sherlock. Having her sacrifice herself to save his best friend just adds delicious drama that they have to overcome in the next episode. And yes, the ā€œlove interestā€ for John is foreshadowing if ever I’ve seen it…Gatis loves little twists like that.

I’m going to have to watch it again at least once before the next episode to pick up on everything I missed…but i had to do that with all the episodes, so nothing new there.

It was good…if a little darker than the initial seasons…looks to me like both the main stars are wanting to do other things now. There might be some jealousy in there too, which I hate to see.

Anyway, that was my take on it. :relaxed:

yea, don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, I just felt like they were a little rough around the edges getting John to that failing. I would of thought some sort of ongoing tension between him and Mary, or over-stressed demands of having a baby (which they did a little). I still have to watch it a second time. I always watch them twice, so my opinions will probably change  I know I will be very sad to see this series go. All I can say is they better step up their production schedule for Doctor Who. I need a fix more than every two years!
