Recently I got into making coasters, and through trial and error I’ve been learning what I need to make photo realistic images pop.
My first attempt has to be sanded down and redone after I screw up all the settings. I did a sephiroth for my wife because she loves the character. Once the spray dried it really started to pop
Next I started trying to make clouds profile shot, that…didn’t go according to plan since the photo has a ton of overlap in light textured hair and such
And then I worked out a photorealistic deer for my dad’s Christmas gift, he used to be a hunter back in the day before he got injured in a chainsaw accident.
Slate’s black on black is always a challenge. The deer with such a strong color range ends up looking sharper as there is less detail. The photodot at very high resolution vs variable power is best also as the reality is that only one power is used and the slate does not have a range of color like some woods.
So typically when I take the slate off the printer, I’ll clean it with isopropyl alcohol, if it needs to be redone, I throw some 80 grit sandpaper on my orbital sander or standard sander (not belt) and run it till it’s smooth again. Clean with isopropyl alcohol before lasering again.
I’m attempting to do this one right now, playing with the light and shadows in a different way then what I typically would do, I failed outright the first time, and got closer with the second try, so I’m hoping that playing with it later on will finish it out. Yes I know I’m crazy for trying this
wait a minute - chainsaw accident while hunting? How did he hunt? did the chainsaw have a silencer I would think firing it up would be a dead give away to the animals.
