Haven’t been using the GF lately, and been busy with life! Good to see this community is continuing to thrive.
Here’s what I’ve been working on lately, a harvest bowl for the heirloom tomato garden. It’s about 12" in diameter. If I could cut the segments on the laser…
You could but layers would be 3/8" thick at best. Otoh, lots of pieces in an interlocking pattern and then turned would use up a lot of scrap and be really amazing.
Honestly if I had that thin of scrap I’d do it. I’m actually remaking this same bowl but alternating the segments to get more of a random pattern and doing it thin might be really cool. I just need 1/4 to 3/8 thick stock. I haven’t cut Purple Heart on the laser but have maple, walnut and Paduk.
There are a number of folks selling “scrap” exotic wood from 1/8" to 1/2" thick and usually 3" wide by 12 or 24 inches long. I bought a lot of it early on when I was expecting to sell more retail results. Below a half inch, I could do some deep relief engraving, but not thicker, so I never got the thicker stuff, but to put together something for the lathe there is a lot more flexibility.
It is normally way less expensive than buying the specific case.
Was thinking about this more and my problem would be glue up with anything thinner than 1/4 inch. But I’m making plans for it. I have a 2"x8"x6’ slab of Paduck I’ll cut strips from.
