Carriage or gantry moves but head is not moving

Hi All,

I just finished a project yesterday evening

that worked perfectly. On the next project the head only moved a little and quite erratically.

when the power is off the head seems to move in a slightly jerky fashion. Other than a problem with the stepper motor I did check the belt guide to the right side of the gantry (opposite end of the head stepper motor) that appears to have some small cracks in it, but not falling apart.

I have also disconnected and reconnected the stepper motor control wire, no effect.

The belt looks fine and this went from working to not working from one project to another.

Any ideas?

If the belt is fine (Check that the drive sprocket is turning) then it’s likely a stepper motor failed on the belt drive (or the stepper driver) Always worth a gander to make sure the cable from the stepper didn’t somehow become unplugged.

Also check the sprockets on the drive pully. I had a problem with a buildup inside of the sprockets. My symptoms were a slight resistance when I moved the print head from side to side with the power off.

I did check and when the belt is off the sprocket seems to spin but with the belt on it behaves like this. I also disconnected and reconnected the wires to the stepper. Seems to be making connection. I find it odd that a motor would work fine for one part then fail for the next. If it were truly random you’d expect it to fail in the middle of a project.

The sprockets are clean. And when the head driver belt is disconnected it seems like the motor spins properly. But when connected it’s like the motor doesn’t have sufficient power. And the belt tension has never been touched. There was an error on the UI that the head experienced a bump. Any way to test for loss of power in the motor? There are no obstructions in the cutting bay.

Also make sure the idler wheel spins freely
