I think this would look really cool with some engraving to let the light though.

You have to engrave almost all the way thru to get light thru colored acrylic, and that’s very inconsistent. I have made similar from smoked acrylic, which might give you the effect you are thinking of.
ooh, yea, like walnut hardwood. That’s next on my list!
