Chicago Earrings - Art Deco Style

Hi guys, I’m Shaena. I usually pop on to just view the boards (you all are amazing and so inspiring!), but this is my very first time posting! Hoping I can become a regular

I made these earrings last night as “table mate gifts” for a conference I’m going to in Chicago next week. I wanted to celebrate the gorgeous architecture of the city and immediately thought an Art Deco pattern would be appropriate!

These are thin (3/16") cheap wood blanks - I think birch? - that I painted gold with Rub & Buff. I’m constantly amazed at the tolerance & detail of the forge. The thinnest areas of the design are probably 1/32" or less!

Feel free to grab the file (svg, below) and make a few for yourself, friends or small craft shows. (Just please don’t sell the digital file!) If you make any, share a pic back and let me see! These would be beautiful out of gold acrylic!

Those are beautiful - and I think I’m gonna have to buy some rub’n’buff. It makes even the must mundane wood glow!

I’m curious about this rub and buff stuff. Does it dry like paint after it’s applied?

Not quite. It’s more like shoe polish. The more you rub it in, the less you’ll see when handling it later. You can, of course, put a finish over it.

Takes a VERY small amount to get good results. The cloth I use to apply it has enough in the fibers that I often don’t even need to add more for small jobs.

No, it’s more of a waxy texture, and hardens when you rub it on. I think it’s made of magic!

Cool. I must round some up and try it out.

Haha. Magic.
