Thanks for explaining your process. I was not familiar with gesso so i had to look it up. So, even with it as a primer, the water color still soaks into the wood? My frustration lately has been with bleed over into areas that were engraved

For the most part the watercolor sinks in because there is not enough pigment to show in the engraved area. If you are using shimmer or white-containing colors (like whites, pastels, or gouache paints) you will still see some of the light pigment on the engrave. You can dilute it on the engrave with some clean water, but you have to be careful not to use too much water on the naked wood, or it can warp.
