Discussion of the September 2017 update (OLD)

probably, but is it really worth worrying about?

If it’s days until you can respond, yes. I wouldn’t want to miss a week with my Glowforge if I was camping off grid and couldn’t get to my email for a week.

Worried? No? Kind of pissed off? Yes.

eh, i consider this sort of thing to be a vagary of the ordering process if i’m honest. i’m not trying to suggest you shouldn’t be annoyed, just that i’m surprised to see that it sticks in so many craws.

I find it interesting that everyone finds the glowforge meaning of ā€˜shipped’ or ā€˜shipping’ to be so bizarre. Its not all that uncommon for a business to mark something as shipped when a shipping label or order is printed, even if that is the first step in the process, and the actual shipping (ie, the postal service touching it) doesn’t happen for days and days.

It’s why you’ll get a shipping notification but tracking will only say something like ā€œlabel createdā€.

I think the issue most people have is that it’s not days and days, but weeks and weeks.

Yes but that isn’t what is happening here. It is more like they submit the order to the factory when you reply. There is a shipping notice when it actually ships from the factory. Nobody would complain if that is a day or two early when the label is created. That is perfectly normal.

Worst case, if you fall on the long end of 6 weeks…

Option A - you get your email today, it gets delivered Oct 9

Option B - since that 6 weeks comes from SOMETHING, that ā€œthingā€ is still in play and you get an address request Oct 2, it gets delivered Oct 9

Either way, for whatever reason, if it WERE to take 6 weeks (which it isn’t right now), your spot in line has you getting it Oct 9. One way you know in advance and complain that you have to wait - while preparing with space & materials. The other way you complain you have to wait without knowing when it is coming. Either way the common denominators are Oct 9 & complaining about waiting.

Given options A or B, I know which I would take.

No the difference is that if you are sent the email just before dispatch you can delay replying and / or get UPS to hold it long enough to avoid a vacation. With six weeks uncertainty you can’t avoid a long vacation in that period.

Can’t plan a long, last minute vacation because I have a laser that might ship. Talk about first world problems… Good for you, but I’d say you are definitely in the extreme minority there!

It isn’t a last minute vacation it was booked last year when the GF was due to ship by July. The problem is the other way round. If GF ask do I want it less than six weeks before the start I can’t say yes as it might arrive just after I leave and that is too long for UPS to hold it.

I would expect out of a sample of 10000 people rich enough to buy a GF I am not the only one rich enough to take vacations longer than the UPS holding period.

I’m one of the most socially awkward people here. Live like a hermit on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Even I could find someone trustworthy enough to sign for me and hold the package until I get back. Give GF a trustworthy address for delivery. Surely you know someone you consider a friend within a couple hour drive.

I envy you

Yes but I wouldn’t give a friend the hassle of being in to receive and store a large heavy parcel for up to a month and take the responsibility for reporting shipping damage, etc.

This seems more like an issue that you should take up directly with Support via email. Exceptions to the process might be able to be handled in a one-off manner that would never be communicated on the open forum. Even if they wanted to state something to that effect, there would be no way the FNLs would allow them to state such a precedent-making thing.

Furthermore, this will likely be a non-issue. @dan says they even expect brand new orders to be fulfilled by the Nov. 30th date. Either production is going well enough that your international delivery will fall into your vacation timeline–in which case there will be a minimal line when you inform them you are back from vacation–or they are going to miss their deadline for your country and your return from vacation will fall within the 30-day reply window or the email will come after your return.

I hope you can enjoy your vacation and the anticipation of it without angsting over missing delivery of your Glowforge.

We’ll all get there and I know it’s a long wait but the anticipation will be worth it I am sure or I’d have pulled my $ and bought from full spectrum

That’s kinda what i was thinking too @markwkruse. So I printed it and loved it and want to print more, there should be an upgrade option to go from 1time purchaser to lifetime.
I am often indecisive and things take awhile to grow on me… like an expensive wallet I bought from a craftsperson, it’s beautiful big and a bit bulkier than expected, can’t carry it in my shorts it’s too heavy I still love it and in a few years from now and I’ll have wished I’d bought a 2nd.

Great update, @dan. Anything you can share at all about the status of the filter?

No news or change in the schedule - we’ll be sure to update folks if and when we know differently.
