Engrave text problem

I’m new, trying desperately to make a print of song lyrics and title on a 1/4" basswood square Board. I’ve used at least 10 trying to solve my problem. : / The song title is to the left of the lyrics and is vertical and lyrics to the right. I have the lyrics set to “score” and the title set to “engrave”. Every time I try to PRINT it starts off great and starts with the title it begins fine but at some point will go off the side of the board or get out of line or something. The rest of the board is fine. What am I doing wrong?? I have cleaned the machine, tried changing the settings. I’m beyond frustrated

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you are using an Aura or Spark, but it would be helpful to tell us what machine you are using and share a screenshot of your project and the failed result so that we can try to help.

Yes, sorry about that. An aura! Not sure how to add pics, but I have some

Here is a pic I took of the 15

tries. As you can see it randomly just messed up.

The best way to test this out is to do a test print - can you print out the Aura Ruler and see what happens? This will help you to determine if the problem is with your project (song lyrics) or the machine.

I can see it is messed up, but we need more context to determine what happened. Can you print a smaller file - on Proofgrade material using Proofgrade setting and post a photo? I suggest printing The Glowforge Gift of Good Measure on one of the light plywoods. That is a known file with engraving, scores and cuts. Seeing how it prints help diagnose what might be going wrong with a machine.

When the machine starts up it sets where 0,0 is and keeping track of the motors decides where the head is. If the head stops or is moved by something other than the motors the 0,0 location will change by that much. This is obviously what happened. Why it happened is less obvious.
However, the Aura is very sensetive to dirt build up on the rails and that is a frequent cause of that kind of jump.

Cut it perfectly.
As far as cleaning the rails, I was cleaning them after every attempt. :woman_shrugging:t2:

So perhaps it is your file that has a problem?
If you want any of us to take a look, you could upload the file here and we can try to look at it.

It printed it out perfectly! So, now what? I’m so confused.

This photo clearly shows a machine that is working properly. The problem you are having with your other project must be related to the file, the material and the execution by your Aura.

Can you please state what material you used in your failed attempts - how thick is it and what size is it?

Like I said, it may be a problem with your file (the lyrics).

I was cleaning the rails after every use because I had read where that could cause a problem. I even turned the project a different way and set it up, but did the same thing. Not in the same part every time.

What material are you using for your projects that fail? Can you share a screenshot showing the entire interface with your project on your material and the settings you have used?

Basswood 12x12x1/8, Typed the lyrics in github uploaded to Glowforge as svg the Song Title and “written by” were text boxes added in glowforge. Never had any trouble with lyrics or “written by” text. It was always the title.

In your original post, you state that it is 1/4". Is it 1/4" or 1/8"? Can you try engraving just the title on something cheap or share the file here and let someone else try engraving just the title.

That is a clue! Have you tried a different font?

Yes, changed the font and it did the same. And, not always in the same spot.

Sorry, my bad! It is definitely 1/8". I’m going to try to only engrave the Title, then do the “written by” and then the lyrics all separately instead of trying to put it all on there at once and see if it matters. I did an engrave of the title on a scrap piece and it worked, so we will see.
