Engraving wood darkly but not deeply?

Anybody have some general advice for how to get a wood engrave that is dark but not deep? (I want to make a jigsaw puzzle from an engraving; don’t want it to be 3-dimensional.)

I know I’ll have to do some experimenting, but I hope I can at least start off in the right direction.

Dark will depend on the wood you are using, not much you can do to change that.
Deep is caused by the power/speed ratio of the laser.

Some folks have used ink or pens into their engrave lines prior to removing masking in order to artificially darken an engrave, and then a sealant to keep everything in place.

This is a great intro to manual mode and messing with power/speed:
