Faux Metal Plate

Wanted to share this project I worked on today.
I wanted metal plaques for some key comics, so I threw some of my scrap materials together and boom!

I used:
Black poster board
Permanent vinyl “brushed gold”

Settings:
Cut: 150/10
Engrave 1000/35

Let me know what you think!

They look great!

But I have to ask - is your
Permanent vinyl “brushed gold” actually PVC based vinyl or a mylar? Because PVC based vinyl is incredibly NOT laser safe.

Mylar, I’m aware PVC isn’t laser safe.
I’m glad you brought that up!

Can you share a link to that material? I really like it and have an application I’d like to try myself…

looks great.

i’m not sure what this means? the material looks like 2 color acrylic, like you would get from rowmark. i’ve done a lot with the rowmark 2c acrylic, including metallic like yours.

Came out great! I’ve done similar things from polyester (Mylar) based Oracal 352, which is available from any vinyl supplier. I got mine from Signwarehouse. It comes in gold & silver as glossy, matte, and brushed.

Poster board is a base material you can get at your local craft/office/dollar store.
Incase you’ve never used it, it’s a large sheet that’s a little thicker and stiffer than card stock.

And the vinyl I used was old and in a pack, however Cynd11 on the thread recommends Oracle 352!
I also look on Amazon and I believe this is Mylar but I don’t want to fully confirm:

Thank you for the supplier recommendation! The one I used was from my stash so I don’t have the link

Permanent vinyl is a sticker like material that’s used with cricut machines/ silhouette machines.
And brushed gold is the type of gold texture

Since I was putting this in a picture frame (and I don’t always have the money for acrylic) I decided to use some scrap materials/ materials I can get on the cheap side. Such as $1 poster board and $11 vinyl!

Thanks for sharing acrylic for getting a similar result! I hope I can try it out soon!

have you checked what that substrate is made of? not all vinyl is dangerous to laser cut, but some can be. it comes down to whether it’s something more like the HTV that GF sells for cutting vs PVC vinyl sheets that aren’t laser-safe. i’d hate to see you damage/destroy your machine (or worse, your lungs if your venting solution isn’t great) when burning PVC vinyl releases chlorine.

The vinyl is Mylar based, I am aware of the harmful effects of PVC. I luckily have spent a lot of time with plastics and building outside of laser cutting!
Im happy to see that PVC being dangerous is so well cared for on these forums
