First Designs of My Own

Today was my first day of playing with materials that were not proof-grade. But I also created my first design file to cut out and see how it looked. Then I engraved a ceramic tile and a slate coaster.

Nice designs! Have you tried ever so softly wiping a slate with some mineral oil? Someone suggested that to me and I loved the look. Your mom is going to love these. <3

I had not heard of that, but I did read somewhere that someone sprays them with lacquer and lets that dry before engraving because it makes the slate appear wet all the time (so darker) and that makes the design pop more.

The slate coaster turned out really great.

Exploring materials was some of the most fun I’ve had with the laser.
I did a set of garden markers in slate. For outdoor signs, high contrast and it’s bulletproof to weather and UV. I second the mineral oil.
