Focus

Please

What is the application of the box:
FOCUS
HEIGHT
(IN INCHES)?

Thank You
Hernan

This is used when you are not using proof grade material. It is very important to get an accurate thickness measurement of your material because the Glowforge uses this measurement when aligning your pattern on the material that you are working on.

Thank You David

Please:

The amount that appears in the FOCUS HEIGHT box is the same as indicated in
UNKNOWN / Use Uncertified Material / THICKNESS MATERIAL ???

Thank You
Hernan

Material thickness is the thickness of the material you are putting in. It’s used for dewarping the camera image of the bed.

Focal height is the height above the crumbtray that you want the laser beam to be in focus at.

By default, the material height will populate the focal height field. This can be overridden and the focal height changed to a different value.

The two boxes also have a relationship as far as autofocus of the beam is concerned. The following 3 scenarios can occur:

If material height and focal height fields are the same: it will use the red dot height measured in the scanning process. Which is good for imprecise material height measurements, etc.

If material height and focal height fields are different: it will respect the focal height field and use that value

If material height and focal height fields are the same, and the autofocus fails for some reason (can’t see the red dot, red dot falls off of the material, etc.): it will use the material height as the focal height.

Thanks for the answer @ jbmanning5, that’s right. I’m going to close this thread - if the problem reoccurs, go ahead and post a new topic.
