Glowforge Nesting

I just received the notice that Glowforge will be adding Smartfit™ to the premium service. I think this has the potential to be the most valuable addition to GF since autofocus.

GF says this nesting feature will be added automatically over the next couple of weeks, but was curious if anyone had received it yet or if there were any beta uses that might offer to share their experiences.

I look forward to trying it!

This is a computationally difficult thing to do and compute time is expensive. I would hedge my expectations if I were you.

Very likely will be quite basic functionality.

It is about time! Even as a basic program I am looking forward to it!

Well, since my manual nesting skills are somewhat related to my alcohol consumption, I’m figuring that anything will be an improvement!

I have it and it’s surprisingly good. It’s not fast with a complicated design (2 minutes for a full sheet) but check it out:

very encouraging! that looked like a fairly large number of items and the result was pretty compact. I tend to do a lot of circular items, so it looks like it may handle them with ease.

question: if you try to space a number of items and they will not all fit, how does it reject?

thanks for the info, looking forward to my upgrade!

No idea honestly! I would like to think it would leave items that it can’t make fit off the edge, but I haven’t seen it.

#1- How did you get it???

#2 If you put in a piece of scrap- can you indicate that the voids are off limit and have it plan around the unusable areas? THAT would be unbelievably useful.

My brain went straight to your #2 question also! Yes, inquiring minds would like to know. This would be helpful to saving a little where we can.

Not at this time. I let it pack then manually move / remove items that impinge the voids.

In reality, this tool is better suited to production runs, maximizing use of full sheets.

It’s being rolled out and I’m one of the lucky ones

I got it as a beta and have only had occasion to use it once, but it worked surprisingly well.

Not going to lie- I’m very jealous. But on the other hand I don’t have much to nest right now, and it sounds like you are testing it out well. Congratulations!

I got it too. It appears to align to the top left corner of a full sheet so since I usually start to use a full sheet at the bottom right corner, I have been able to flip my sheet of wood or acrylic and make use of the nesting. As @dwardio said, it is better suited to production runs using full sheets, not my thing, but still looks useful for me occasionally.
