@dan I understand that Glowforge support doesn’t want to take on things that they can’t be responsible for, but it seems to me that they could start offering better support for fixing things at home in certain areas.
Take this thread for what I mean:
It seems to me that by this point Glowforge knows this is an issue and they could offer a sensible epoxy based solution, possibly even selling the right adhesive for the job. It would be good for everyone, show that Glowforge is focused on helping us get back to work and certainly make us users happier by offering a real solution that doesn’t require cross shipping replacement units.
It seems like it would be simple to do, offer a good written set of instructions and wouldn’t require much training of support staff. It seems like it’d be win-win.
I think that would be valuable but I also can see how by publicly acknowledging the extent of this ongoing issue could impact sales.
I was pretty frustrated when my replacement unit’s lid popped off after very little use and always being extremely cautious about how I opened it. My “founders” unit from the original campaign lasted its entire life without issue.
“The adhesive that we use to bond the lid is 3M part number DP8805NS. Note that it’s an industrial adhesive that requires process control to achieve an acceptable result. DP8805NS must be applied to a solvent prepared surface that has been properly evaporated. Its contains small glass beads to set the bond line gap. Which requires the correct amount adhesive and clamping pressure for the gap to be within specification. We’ve developed automated dispense and production clamping fixtures to achieve a repeatable process on our manufacturing line. While I’m sure consumers can likely obtain DP8805NS online, they may struggle to achieve an acceptable/lasting result.”
