Going from Corel Draw to Inkscape re tab making

In Draw, one can align text along a random path previously drawn, and make the individual letters normal(at right angles) to the line.
If one could do this with a series of rectangles. then you’ve got a way of creating tabs on non-regular shapes.
It occurred to me that if one created a ‘font’ of different shapes, you could use this as a method.

Is there a similar command in Inkscape, as I’m just starting to use it, but can’t find anything at the moment ?
I’ve started doing it manually by manipulating the nodes in a series of paths, but with a few hundred tabs to construct, it could be next Christmas before I’m done.

Apologies. I’ve found the commands, but I’ll post back when I’ve solved the problem if no one beats me to it !
