Help with Vectornator to glowforge

Hi! I’m a newbie trying to learn enough to create my own little projects. I’m the process I’ve learned Procreate, and Vectornator. For the life of me I can’t figure out how to differentiate between cut, score, and engrave in Vectornator so I can move the project to the glowforge. I know they need to be differentiated in color (red, blue, black) but once I ‘trace’ the image I’m stumped. I’ve googled, you tubed, skill shared, everything I know to try to find the answer. Any help would be SO appreciated :two_hearts:

I have a slight amount of experience with Vectornator. Can you upload a sample image of what you are trying to do? Maybe I can get you started in the process.

If you prefer, you can send it to me in a PM.

It is not possible to define cut, score and engrave in files created in design apps to import to the Glowforge UI. That is not an available feature.

You can define vector and bitmap elements. Bitmaps can only be engraved, but vectors could be engraved, cut or scored. You have to select that when the design is in the UI.

Even if you export a design from the UI, the settings for each element/step are included but will not be automatically applied if you re-load that design.

Well alright then…

Let’s look at the positives from this experience:

I wasn’t too stupid to figure out how to do it since it can’t be done.
The rescue group I donate the contents of my swear jar to will get another $7 from me trying to figure this out.

Now lemme go see if I can figure out how to do it using the GFUI

Thanks so much!! :two_hearts:

Just define the steps in the UI, on the left side, once the design is loaded. Each color of vector elements will be it’s own unique step.

I am trying to make a little drop earring with an outline of my cat. I just want to cut the earring and hole for the hardware and score the cat to paint.

outline.

So set the outline and hole to one color, and the perimeter of each score area to another.

When I upload something it shows as one step. I’m assuming (and yes, I know what they say about that :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:) that I bring them in as separate layers. I’m playing around with it now.

The GF UI has no concept of layers. They need to be individual vector elements with different colors.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. How to get them defined as a cut, score, or engrave. I create an image using Procreate as it is what I am most familiar with. I then use Vectornator to trace and change the image from a bitmap to vector. Then I upload it to glowforge. When I do, it comes in as one image. I can’t figure out how to break it into individual pieces to assign them a function. That’s the part that I can’t figure out.

I appreciate all your responses, I just don’t have the knowledge yet to understand.

You have a single-color vector (as evidenced by the fact it allows “cut” on the left.) Assign different colors to the parts you want scored, and they will show up as separate steps in the UI.

Here’s an example. Same vector shapes, but on the left they are the same color, on the right, one is a different color…

In the UI, the one on the left would appear as one step, but the one on the right would be two.

You need to do a bit more editing in Vectornator before you can do that. If you look closely at your autotraced figure, it consists of an inner line and an outer line. This is common with autotraced images where it’s really converting both sides of a thick line to a vector.

In Vectornator, go in to Edit node mode and click Separate. That will allow you to select either the inner line or outer line and delete it.

Once you have only one line defining each of your features, you can set the stroke color of your scored parts separately from your cut parts.

Thanks - I was wondering why all my drawings did that.

Sorry - walked out to garage and discovered AC drain line from attic must be backed up as I now have a leak in my garage ceiling

Gotta deal with that, but just to make sure I understand….

The colors are designated during design then and not after uploading to GF.

Colors define what you are thinking of as layers.

GF UI does not recognize layers but instead uses colors to define steps.

Regardless, your design is one color, so it will be one step.

Thank you!

Well it’s super sloppy cause I didn’t wanna waste time if I was wrong again but I finally got it!! :raised_hands:t2: thank you all so much for your help! In Vectornator I did the earring outline and hole for the findings in red. On a separate layer I did the cat outline and eyes in blue. I then did export to SVG and saved it to my files. When I imported it into GF it was in the different steps :two_hearts: Now to go get frustrated with the AC unit

I love the name you gave to your project (“pleasework”).

Congrats!
