So Hobby Lobby has a new wood section. I was wondering if anyone has tried to use it. It is basswood plywood and I believe balsa wood. I could be wrong about the second one, but I was just wondering. I purchased it, but then thought I should probably ask around before I cause myself some heartache. The second wood feels extremely weird. It is all unfinished, but, something seems weird about it. Probably because I’ve never heard of balsa wood…until I hopped on the Google machine.
Balsa has always been popular with model builders. Particularly for things like airplanes that need to be lightweight.
I haven’t had my hands on balsa wood since I was a kid building model airplanes but I think it would be super quick to cut on a laser.
Balsa is super light and I think it’d work well for building stuff, but I never found a lot of use for it in my GF, (I’m not a model builder though. ) Basswood is my #1 choice for engraving and the light color and lack of much grain works really well. I’ve used the HL stuff before and it worked fine, but it was a bit pricey and I only bought it when I couldn’t get it elsewhere or in pinch.
I have no idea, but when I realized the thick ply weighed less than the medium, the only thing I could think of for the core was Balsa.
Thanks everyone, I wanted to try it out since they just had added it. I don’t model either, just wanted to make a box out of it to see how well it would hold up. That would explain the way it feels.
