So sorry about your ceiling, but you did the right thing in tearing out the sheet rock. If you get black mold in there it will create all kinds of health issues that are hard to figure out. Mold once its taken hold is really hard to get rid of.

Sorry for your troubles. Water is the toughest problem to solve.
Man, that sucks. We put heat tapes on a while back for just this reason (after manually removing ice dams up on a ladder which was scary since our gutters are 22’ off the ground)
I have a tendency to go overboard, so I’m definitely going to be installing heat cable along with everything else I can do to prepare for next winter. But right now we’re doing damage control.
