Hold the CTRL key and click on the Up and Down arrow keys. It lightens and darkens the pickup. 
(Also, the new slider ranges for engraving do a great job of eliminating it if it’s a jpeg, the arrow keys are for the traces on physical images.)

Don’t forget my favorite controls… ctrl/cmd-shift-up and down. (Described here). They feed extra magic to the edge detection algorithm that can help clean up your drawing.

Thank you for sharing this message. This is the impression that I was getting from posts by the most productive users, but there are a lot of “glass is half empty” comments.
