I had the best day

Yeah, back row is walnut ply, cherry ply, maple ply, and black acrylic. Front smaller pieces are the hardwoods: cherry, maple, walnut, 1/4" acrylic black, and clear

So after reading more into it, some woods are known as sensitizers, and can cause you to develop allergic reactions over time. Lacewood reactions are commonly caused by allergies to the wood. Rosewood is apparently a very bad sensitizer as well. If you are in contact with rosewoods (especially cocobolo), you can develop an allergy, and even pink eye. I overheard a discussion while I was in woodcraft where one guy was telling another guy that if he was working with Afrormosia to pull out any splinters immediately, or it could lead to gangrene/sepsis.

This page has a list of woods and their effects: (some scary stuff! knowings half the battleā€¦)

Love the selection of your pieces.

Are they all under 1/2" thick or are you going to need re-sawing?

Yeah, all of them except for that one piece of padauk. Its right around .75, but its not for the laser, so no big deal =P.

I bought an 8ftx12"x1" piece of gorgeous cherry that they cut down for me to 20"x12"x.4" pieces. I cant wait to try it out!

Your breaking my heart :broken_heart: because I want to laser with a GF :glowforge:, but will wait to see what you are going to do with that wood selection.

Please post for our Glowforge ā€œpornā€ pleasure

What?! - They will actually resaw it for you? What type of band saw do they use? Iā€™m with James I want to go there on vacation.

Sorryā€¦ I canā€™t see it in the thread anywhere. Whatā€™s the name of this place?

I didnt mention it, however for those of you looking for similar places, there are a number of exotic wood mills located around the US (A few in each state from what ive seen):

Baird Brothers in Ohio/PA (who I was considering going to visit before I found this one closer)
Northwest Hardwoods in OR/WA
Exotic Lumber in MD
Globalwoodsource in CA
etc

Most of these places carry very similar stock, and might be in proximity to your location. Im sure there are more that a quick google search will turn up in areas I didnt cover.

Not to mention there is probably a Woodcraft store close to you as well. I have one down the street and they import from the local mill and usually have a good selection of exotics and sometimes plastics like delrin and acetyl. The only reason I found the local mill, is because I bought out all their stock of thins, and started hunting for more! ha

I went back through the thread, but donā€™t see the name of the place listed. Did anyone get the name? I have to travel through western NC several times a year.

I think @takitus wants to protect his source

Its kind of this, and a couple of other reasons, but moreso that there are exotic lumber mills all over the place. This one just happened to be close to me.

@jeffarazzi Theres one in Richmond called Yukon Exotic Woods (YUKON Exotic Woods). Either way, there are a number of them in this area (appalachia), so if you google it, youll see all of them listed.

Look at this thread from the potential perspective of the viewersā€¦

Oh, lookā€¦ takitus found something awesome and heā€™s sharing it with us. Oh, waitā€¦ no heā€™s not. Heā€™s just bragging that he found something awesome and actually has no intention of sharing.

Iā€™m not saying thatā€™s my perspective on this. I wanted to know as well, but I really donā€™t care. Iā€™ve got plenty of things to do once I get my Glowforge.

But Iā€™m not quite sure I understand the point of creating the thread. Was it really to say ā€œLook what I have! Nah nah nahā€¦ Itā€™s super secret so Iā€™m not telling you. But I wanted to make sure you know that I have it. Because Iā€™m justā€¦ thatā€¦ awesome.ā€

Anywayā€¦ Just a thought that could cross a personā€™s mind.

And, of course, this is all in good fun. Please take it as such!

In case thereā€™s any doubt or confusion, this is absolutely a place to share cool things that youā€™re stoked about, period. Sharing something does not mean youā€™re expected to provide information for other people to do the same thing. Thatā€™s actually the rule for designs (ā€œdonā€™t ask for sourcesā€), and is certainly a reasonable baseline for anything else, like sharing material sources.

This is a place to share, and this is a place to give help. But nobodyā€™s required to do either of those things, let alone both at the same time.
