Icosahedron Snowflake Light Decoration

Icosahedron Snowflake Tightai

This is a pretty easy project to sit on a shelf with a tea candle inside. I used 3mm ply.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Nice, always good to see more polyhedra.

What is your light source?

You should check out @pubultrastar’s work, if you haven’t seen it he makes great polyhedra too.

Lightsource was a simple led picked up from Aldi, not for this project but I just set it on top for pictures.

Icosahedron Snowflake base-AI

I made a quick stand for this that you can add by replacing one of the panels. This final panel makes assembly easier and gives easy access to add different styles of lights into the structure.

I am wondering if the scale factor Inkscape used for your SVG drawing is correct. For the narrow dimension of the small slot at a triangle apex used for joining, my Inkscape drawing shows 0.050 inches. For a 3mm thick material, a kerfed dimension before cut might be 0.112 inches.

I’m not sure if I have selected the part you are discussing, but here is what it looks like in my Inkscape.

The cutout for the tabs are 3mm x 1.7mm in my sketchup file. That allows for a pretty snug fit where you shouldn’t need glue. If it feels too tight you can take the tabs to a piece of sandpaper to knock off a hair. I struggled to get a perfect fit 100% of the time and opted to make it tight vs. loose.

There’s my problem. My drawing shows 2.249mm X 1.270mm for the slot. So to get to a 3mm length on the drawing would take a scale factor of 1.333 thereby making the length of a triangle side 60.008 X 1.333 = 80.046mm
Thank you for the help.

I think I’ve got a similar problem and wasn’t sure what was happening. my copy of inkscape is showing that rectangle at 1.535mm x 2.514mm. My usual stock of BB ply runs about 0.118 in.(about 2.99mm) and I’m not sure what scale to increase by? currently I’m showing a triangle side measuring at 60.439

Thanks

I’ve never used Inkscape before so I’m not sure how to scale a SVG. I can try exporting it from AI again. Maybe the scale will be correct this time?
