He didn’t, he designed the piece and inlaid them together. That sort of geometric design has been explored for centuries in islamic art, you can download a lot of patterns like that and do something like this pretty easily

The impressive part to me is the level of dedication to the gag. I personally wouldn’t want to try it because the way it’s designed none of the pieces interlock, so you’re aligning everything by eye. I prefer inlay projects where all of the components lock together, thus making the alignment dead on and foolproof.

It’s nice work, for sure.
