yes, the glowforge has no problem with painted or stained materials
Somethings are very unsafe to put in the laser. Never put anything with vinyl in the Glowforge. That includes many fake leathers.

If you can involve a friend with an easier time reading and working with complex stuff, both of you could come up to speed and they can also make things they could not do otherwise. There is probably not another similar machine less complicated to learn but a friend that can help that is able to be there with you would makes things much safer and easier.
