Leather wallet

I just engraved on my 1st leather wallet. I’m having some black run off… is there an oil I should apply? Or just clean with soap and water? Baby wipe? HELP

I brush as much off as I can with a dry paintbrush, then buff with a dry rag. Wet will just make it stain the leather.

Depending on the finish of the leather when you cut it, I find that a lightly damp paper towel takes smoke residue right off with no discoloration. Just wipe gently and keep moving to clean parts of the towel as you go so you don’t smear it around.

I use a leather cleaner/conditioner on mine and it cleans all the soot right off.

If it’s really bad, or I’m in a hurry, I’ll wash with rubbing alcohol - making sure to wet the entire piece evenly, but use cleaner/conditioner (Murphy’s oil soap is highly recommended).
