I wanted to share this because I’m really proud of the project, but I’m not putting it in Made on a Glowforge, because this video isn’t about the Glowforge part. That will come in part 2. For now, though, here’s what I done:
Looking forward to part II!
Yeah that was outstanding. I knew about it from previous posts, but your OTA tricks and other interface stuff are really great.
I’ve always admired your marquee so I am looking forward to the entire series.
I’ve always meant to ask. Did you make your work tables yourself? I’ve been trying to learn to weld, but my apartment and small patio limit my options. Sorry to diverge from the LED marquee, which is also awesome to see.
Amazing!
Thanks for asking. I didn’t make them, they’re IKEA - BROR
One of my pandemic projects was to tear out these horrible vinyl benches that were wasting that whole side of the room.
I don’t know carpentry, but I can demolish.
I’d been looking at that part of the room for a long time, imagining a counter top with storage underneath, to set off that area from the rest of the space. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to learn to DIY it or maybe hire someone to put in custom cabinets, and I while I was dithering literally for years, one day I saw that IKEA sold exactly what I needed, almost like it had been designed to my specifications, and thus it started getting fixed up one small step at a time.
It all came together when we had a plumbing issue that required cutting open the ceiling. Since we had to have that repaired and painted anyway, I got the wall fixed and painted and started putting up lights and things. So now I a pretty sweet storage and secondary work space, if I do say so myself. One thing I haven’t gotten around to yet is that I would like to close off the back so you don’t see all the junk on the shelves. My plan is to cover it with a giant sheet of markerboard. Not because it would be particularly practical to have a whiteboard there, but since it has to be made of something, it might as well be mildly interesting/useful. I just have to get around to finding and purchasing the material and figuring out how to affix it so it looks nice.
Lots of options depending on what effect you’re thinking of. Big bold fasteners so they’re a statement vs just a way to hold the marker boards to the racks. Real or faux hinges - again, big bold & black to highlight them. If they’re real, you could then have the marker board swing open as doors. Or for a permanent but hidden fastener, try 3M UHB. Or fasten u-channel to the rack and slide the panels into the u-channel. It comes in white and would match the marker board.
How about an infinity mirror?
(Very nice space, and, yes scrolling marquees excite the nie-year-old in me, too.)
This might have been the first time I “liked” a youtube video.
I also love the shirt!
Thanks for the ideas. I think some kind of channel/frame is the way to go. If it’s going to be a big marker board, I think I want it to look like one, just a big expanse of board with a frame and all the fasteners hidden. Someday I’ll get around to it.
That would be very cool, but probably incredibly expensive.
I’ll make this part 2 public tomorrow sometime, I don’t think releasing it in the middle of the night is good for the algorithm. But early access for folks here (maybe someone will watch it and spot a mistake):
I am pretty overwhelmed with the time and effort this project involved, and I am in awe of the result. Thanks so much for sharing the process.
I love that you can’t see the borders even before you put the diffuser over it. Your explanation is clear enough that I feel like even I could do it…pretty sure I’m wrong, but you make it seem so logical!
Did you post part of this earlier (like a year ago?) I feel like I’ve seen the support system before.
Yes, I’ve mentioned bits and pieces of this in places. But I never had the full story as I wanted to present it.
Ok good, it’s not de ja vous if it actually happened!
Same here. I was thinking that another one on the back of the house to hurrass the neighbors that keep hurassing you.
