Complete newbie learning by trial and error. Wondering if light should be visible through each side of the front panel?
Yes, it’s normal for there to be a small gap on either side of the lid.

You bet! Have fun. 
As you’re using it, you’ll find there are numerous areas of loose fitting joints. The gf was designed to pull air in via these areas as well as the main intake under the right side.
