Does anyone have any experience cutting or engraving mat board? If someone does have some experience, can you share with me the settings you use to cut the mat board. Thank you in advance.
Matboard is a brand name. Lasers were not a thing when I last used it, so you will probably have to run a bunch of tests. It is very similar to cardboard so this might be a good starting point…
just remember you’re going to get some char from the cutting.
That might not be what you want.
at the end of the day sometimes ya just gotta use an Xacto blade.
There are many posts about mat board here in the forum. Utilize the search function for this information. Mat board
Just an “in general” comment from my experience, but it’s too “burny” and produces too much charring to be of much use on the laser unless the burned look is desired. I use a lot of “chipboard” which is similar, but only for things where the charring is not a problem.
I’ve had good luck with cutting museum board on an Aura. The Aura gives cleaner cuts on paper based materials for me. I don’t have the settings handy, will try to dig them up.
Generally speaking - go as fast and hot as your project will allow.
We probably should have a different section on the forum for the “hobby” machines. They are drastically different to the CO2 lasers many of us have.
It is possible to cut fast enough or light enough with a CO2 laser to emulate the machines with 1/10th the power and have the cuts be similar, but it takes a bit of experimenting.
