I recently moved. Brought my existing wifi mesh devices with me, but my Glowforge Plus is too far out of range to connect, so I set it up to use my iOS hot spot instead.
It works perfectly after I run the setup, but refuses to connect on the next use. I think it just can’t find the hot spot.
After I re-run the Wifi setup process, it works again, every time. It’s not the end of the world to have to do this, but it does add about 5 minutes to every job.
Anyone else using a hot spot and have a workaround for this?
I’m also wondering if the Glowforge fully clears old connections after going through the Wifi setup process. If not, it may be trying to connect to my wifi mesh, which may be detectable even though it’s too far out of range to provide a usable signal.
Is the hot spot enabled when you first turn your Glowforge on? If not you’ll definitely want to enable it first, wait about 20-30 secs for the hot spot to be fully enabled, then turn on the Glowforge.
Yeah, it’s always on as an available signal since I use it frequently with my laptop, but I’ll try toggling it off/on and then waiting 30 seconds to see if it just needs rebroadcast itself. Maybe leaving it “on” in iOS settings doesn’t actually leave it in a broadcasting state. Thanks for the help. I’ll report back with any findings.
I could be wrong, but I believe it only “remembers” the most recent connection. I have 2 WiFi networks in my house and have connected it to both over time, but if the usual connection is down, it never connected to the other…
Luckily I haven’t had to set up the Wi-Fi more than the first time yet so I will probably need this information in the future as well. It always makes me a bit nervous wondering if it’ll be hard or not.
Update – I tried toggling the hot spot off and on, then connected to my laptop to make sure the hot spot signal was active, and then powered on the Glowforge.
Worked great, no wifi setup process needed. I don’t know if doing things in a particular order had any real effect, but I’ll stick to this order in the future.
I had only ever used my Verizon hotspot from my phone, as that was all I have available at my location. And after years of doing that, I (probably) determined that any time I took my phone out of hotspot range, then I would have to rerun the setup. So basically, every day I would have to run setup. But every time I left the house, it would forget and have to redo it.
About a year ago, I got a Tmobile home wifi (still only gets 4G speeds, but at least it is no limit and doesn’t move.) Since installing this in the house, I have never had to rerun the setup.
