Nonlaser things that I think GFers will find interesting

I just recently read this, I bet you’d like it:

Stupid discourse isn’t showing a preview so I’ll add it manually:

Great sci fi. My library had it so even better

That had been recommended to me on Mastodon as well. Clearly I need to give it a go!

I try to imagine taking this video and showing it to actual Euclid
:exploding_head:
Unless there is a way discovered to evade the speed of light even the nearest stars are unreachable, much less galaxies. If octopus managed to live a hundred years instead of two they might get somewhere, but our Thumb has done a lot more to advance out species than our brains.

Crazy awesome.

There is always hope.

I have so many pics of people doing this. Even at the children’s hospital! It’s infuriating.

We don’t use a wheelchair but my daughter has a handicapped placard because she has low muscle tone. She tires out easily. Sometimes she can go and go and go, but other times she struggles and needs a lot of help. Also, sometimes when she pushes herself to do more, then she can’t do other things that require her muscles. (Like when she’s too tired to chew her food, for example.) I’m sure people look at us like - why do we have a placard - but I don’t really care. Another reason we really need the placard is because of how difficult it is with her at times navigating parking lots - she sometimes refuses to hold hands and throws a fit or plops down on the ground. It’s very stressful and I end up carrying her when I should not be carrying her (she’s too big).

We too have a placard in our car - and it’s 100% because of how we are at the end of the trip, we look fine at the beginning. I try not to question using it for that reason, but I still do.

OTOH, I think the awareness of invisible disabilities and mobile wheelchair users, etc. is higher nower than it has ever been so hopefully there are and will be fewer judgemental idjits questioning whether a vehicle “deserves” a placard.

It’s a laser thing, but I think fits.

Mike’s Electric Stuff is one of my favorite YouTube channels. He takes taking things apart to a whole nother level. If you ever wanted to see what’s inside of some industrial galvo lasers…

I was looking at a place to get drones that could see in infrared but I was told they were just a fly-by-night-operation

When I had my second hip replaced (right one this time) I decided to trade in my 2013 red Mustang. The doors are very long and require lots of room for the door to swing wide. I swapped it for a Volvo so I wouldn’t have to continue to put up with people who park too close for me to get into the car. I was always looking for spots where I could get the door to open to its widest. Large pickup trucks, vans and SUVs were the most difficult to park near as they sometimes fill most of the parking space.

I’m sure a few of us are interested in electronics repair… And a few of us are also interested in stereo equipment…

I’ve got just the thing:

If nothing else the thermal camera trick at about minute 23 is pretty great.

Very cool! It also reminds me of how much “audiophile” equipment is utter wankery. Dude has some pretty amazing test equipment.

I wonder (har har) how this one turned out from 2017?

This is about 3-D printing, but I have a feeling that the concepts here would apply to lasering.

One of my favorite YouTubers. He has several mind-blowing videos where you think he’s just fixing electronics and he’ll just casually machine a new gear or electroplate a volume knob or re-wind a transformer.

We have even seen examples of some of this here, including the notched tabs @dan shared long ago.

I wonder if people who fear flying would be comforted by this?

Pretty sure the answer would be none. I do find their choice of math interesting since generally when people think of flying they think of themselves flying - so a plane with 250 people on it, that flies 2000 miles, by this math would add half a million miles to its travel distance but in reality it’s still 2000 miles. It makes for a cool headline, but bad statistics.
