Ironically I was just looking at these…
It gave a good description of how they are constructed and was going to start making one. But realized I need to finish a few more projects before I half start another one.

Can you provide the Etsy link for the file
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your process and especially for answering our questions.
There you go!
You’re welcome. If you think of any others, let me know.
Great planning to get this visually impressive/detailed/composited pieces done! You really put it together!

I love this!! Papercraft is why I was interested in Glowforge in the first place. Awesome Totoro too, thanks for sharing the source, I didn’t know you could get this kind of file on Etsy
Have you considered retiring it from backing duty and adding some color?
That could be very interesting…
There are some really nice designs available on Etsy. If you are on Facebook, there is also a group called Papercut Light Boxes you might like. There are some really talented designers in there.
Thats gorgeous what a great idea and design! Thanks for sharing it!
I would upvote a better knife tool in Inkscape. The Cut Path tool works partially, but since it breaks apart the bottom object, it can be a challenge to get everything grouped up again when you have a closed path with lots of curves. Using the boolean union or difference is what I generally use, but it doesn’t always produce the cut I need.
Excellent work!
I’ve been inspired to work on a lightbox of my own. Do you have any light source suggestions?
For ease and quick shipping, I ordered a kit from Amazon that included RGB LED strips (with adhesive backing), a power source and a 44 key remote. I also ordered some connectors because I wanted to put several strips of lights on the back board. Later I went and ordered more remotes and power sources from Aliexpress because there was so much more left of the LED strip. They were very cheap.
Amazon kit (I’m in Canada) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N8XCKNE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Connectors https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07MRC7W4Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just make sure your connectors are the same size as your LED strip.
Aliexpress remotes and power source https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32956376712.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2a444c4dRtP24Z I ordered the 44 key remote and the 12V 2A US power source to work with the light strip from the kit and the outlets I have here in Canada.
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much! That helps a ton.
You’re welcome! I get lots of help from people on this forum (and elsewhere) and I like to pay it forward.
Traci, thanks so much for your details walk through of how you’ve built these awesome boxes. I’m working on one myself and wondering if you’ve found any creative ways to mount the power connected to the panel at the back of the box. I’m trying to avoid a situation where a tug on the power cord pull the LED off and also trying to make it look a little more tidy. Have you come across anything? I’ve tried looking for something like this for strip lights, but to not avail - https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Waterproof-plug-panel-mount-12-pin_60552817743.html
Thanks!
So far, I haven’t mounted it. I’ve left everything hanging free as I wasn’t sure how much length the people I was gifting the boxes to would need. What I would like to find is a set up where I can mount a switch on the side or back of the box but I haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. I haven’t tried anything like the connector you linked to. Sorry I can’t be more help!
Wow
@traci_akierman - Thanks for the links above. I ordered everything! Quick question for you - have you worked out how to have two light strips in different colors in the back of the lightbox? I can seem to stop them from both being the same colour when joined together.
