To be fair, Glowforge is billing it as a 3D laser printer.

I believe it came from the fact that you can cut 2D parts to make a 3D object like the earth globe…or refers to the z-axis ability to track the height and move along adjusting for distance…something laser cutters don’t do natively right now.
