I was just thinking about how you could translate it to a more solid form 
You’d need a way to deal with the different angles of the joins, but I don’t know how! Putty, maybe? Or air-dry clay.

Do you know the polygon masks by Wintercroft? The design is also with tabed paper joints where you glue the overlap. The instructions say you can just cut off the tabs and tape the pieces too: a faster but less stable construction.I think the same is valid for this design. The problem with using MDF is, I think, that the design does not account for the thickness of the material and small pieces would not fit well. Would it be possible to offset the size of the pieces? Would you have to make some larger and some smaller ??
