Hey there, I just got my glowforge aura and have been learning how it works and what I can do with it! I wanted to make some 12x12 layered maps, so I put together the idea in Inkscape, got all of the layers and mapping perfect. When i went to do a mockup on cardstock, the layers weren’t how they are on the SVG and its off on each one by about an 1/8th inch. Do I have to come up with a way to ensure my product is perfectly placed in the middle of the forge or do I just have to deal with it? I was hoping it’d be a bit more accurate than that.
Welcome to the forum.
If you are just using the lid camera for alignment, your best shot is if you set the focus and your design directly under the lid camera. For precise alignment, consider making a jig and/or using
the placement tool.
What would a jig look like? Is it like a ring that goes around and spaces it properly?
It can be something as simple as a square frame that defines the outside perimeter of all layers of your map so that every layer is placed in the same place on the Glowforge bed. The jig is included with your design so your design is properly centered in the jig. You cut the jig from cardboard or cardstock while ignoring the other elements of your design. Remove the cutout, put in your first layer of cardstock. Ignore the jig cut and enable the design cut. Repeat until all layers have bee cut.
Ok, I’ll have to try making something that works then. I also had the idea where I could just cut out a border every time so I lose about a 1/4in but it will always be aligned since I’m cutting it and the square out of the wood.
The Aura is very finiky about clenliness, and can jump where it thinks 0,0 is if the rail is not very clean. A jig will not solve this.
