QOTD from Glowforge: First week with your Glowforge-- What does it look like?

Where it will live: At home next to the kitchen where I have a perfect little spot reserved for it.

Who will use it: Me (graphic designer), and friends with great or funny ideas

What will get made the first week: My list is quite long and gets longer all the time, but first week will be spent experimenting with different materials, and whichever fancies me.

Where it will live: In my home office next to my 3D printer. I think itā€™s too nice to be stuck out in the garage with my other less civilized tools.

Who will use it: My wife, my two children, my father and I will be the primary users. I suspect friends and family beyond that too.

What will get made the first week: We will likely first run a few items from the Glowforge catalog on their marked/approved materials. This will be a quick way to get the family excited and understand the basic process. I will then dig into more advanced tests of both designs and materials. With a solid understanding of the capabilities and results, I can adjust any of my growing library of designs that I have been creating in CAD while waiting, and start producing some of my own creations. Once I am comfortable with the process, I will bring the family up to speed on creating and printing their own custom designs. They have growing lists of ideas too. This is really where our interests are, creating our own designs, more so than download and cut someone elseā€™s. Although, I am sure there will be some of that as well.

Where it will live: On a workbench in my garage.

Who will use it: Mostly yours truly but I know my kids are itching to do a few projects on it, and of course I will let them express their creative little selves.

What will get made the first week: Anything and everything! Some metal etching, some acrylic items and sculptures, some plywood projects, a wallet or two. Iā€™ll etch all the familyā€™s iPads and the Mac Book. Trying to figure out where I can get all my material supplies (hobby shops, leather places, hardware stores, specialty items like Cermarkā€¦)

Where it will live: In my wood shop.

Who will use it: Me, My wife, familyā€¦ (mostly me, but Iā€™m sure my wife will use it as well.)

What gets made the first week: Probably play around with engraving the sides or trays for some small boxes

Neatā€¦ could it be a woodblock-percussion dice tumbler that plays a short song every time you roll?

dies of jelousy Hahah Wow!! What an amazing setup!

Wow, just wow, I am impressed by, well, everything. Iā€™ve got to get in and build a larger format CNC router. Your rotary indexer is so impressive. What is the max size it can handle? We see a 4x4 mounted.

You have all the colors for your 3d printer. I tend to keep one color at a time and order another when I am getting low.

BTW, if you donā€™t know it but it looks like you would, PETG is the most awesome of the not super expensive filiments. I honestly donā€™t get why people are using so much ABS and PLA.

Good eye. The max is 4x4. but the length can be up to 60" (basically the width of the machine) What not shown in the picture is the tailstock. The rotary is mostly used for custom canes, table legs & Wine/Candle holders.

As for filament- We use mostly use ABS. But we also use PET, Nylon & Carbon fiber (This is not something we use often due to the nozzle change before each use) NinjaFlex (Normal & Semi) and we have a couple spools of PLA (only for the color).

Itā€™s nice to have good stock of color for when I project comes up. Vs. Waiting for an order to come in.

@JeremyNielsen Itā€™s nice to have the right tool for the right job on tap. Our future GF will feel right at home when it arrives.

Where will it live: My two car garage slowly morphed into a full time shop. Some of the tools are on wheels so I can reconfigure workflow or make floor space as needed. I was thinking of putting the Glowforge on this cart from Harbor Freight. Then I can work with it at the workbench or roll it out to the driveway to use the Pro Slot. I will definitely need to make a cover for it because it can get dusty out there.

Who will use it: Just me. But I can see friends and relatives are starting to get my ideas of things they want me to make them.

What will get made the first week: I am a notorious tool hoarder. I will buy something with no immediate need for it. But the feeling I have when the need arises and I just walk out to the shop to use it is awesome. The Glowforge is an extreme example of that. So first week is going to be a lot of sample cuts and engravings in different materials. Small jewelry items for my wife will probably be the first real things to come off it.

I keep a stock of small acrylic sheet in the shop for whatever comes up. (Thanks Tap Plastics scrap bin) I picture needing a little strip or square of it for something and just going out, drawing the shape on it and the Glowforge cutting it out. Sometimes it is just the small things that make me happy.

The Glowforge will be living in my basement workshop. Currently planning out the venting situation as I have a door but no window. I see a 4" hole through the outside rim joist in my future.

My daughter (13) and I will be the main users of the Glowforge.

The first week changes from day to day as I see new things that I want to try. Iā€™m currently learning Sketchup, and 123d make (thanks for the recommendations in other threads) and have designed a few things I want to make. My daughter will be starting mainly in card and thermal transfer materials.

Where it will live: in my Studio space (in the living room of my apartment)

Who will use it: Primarily me, but possibly my Fiancee

What will get made the first week: Wedding Decorations/favorsā€¦ at least if it arrives in time. Beyond that I have soooo many ideas and plans. I hope to open my own Etsy shop with my designs.

Where it will live: in my man-cave computer room.

Who will use it: me mostly, some friends that sell handmade leather goods would like to try some experiments.

What will get made the first week: small projects until I learn how it all works.

Where it will live: In my bedroom on top of my dresser (though I may move it to a spot closer to the window depending on how well the filter works)

Who will use it: Primarily me, though Iā€™m sure friends and family will want to try it out. I suspect it will be a bit more user friendly than my 3D printer.

What will get made the first week: Iā€™m pretty much planning on throwing anything that fits and is laser safe into the Glowforge. Iā€™ll probably try to engrave a design onto my jeans. And Iā€™ll need to see if it can sear the outside of a sous vide cooked steak.

Where will it live: on the ground floor of my 2 storey shed, which is also filled with woodworking & metal working tools on the ground floor and computers on the upper.
Who will use it: my wife and I, plus 3 young teenage children. Weā€™re all currently brushing up our skills in Sketchup & Inkscape and trolling Pinterest with fervour.
First week: My wife gets first use as she was closest to predicting the final 30 day sales total. Iā€™m further down the list, but I do have 30+ days work leave accumulated, which Iā€™ll be taking as soon as it arrives.

Where it will live: Depending On future plans Either in my mini work space in my apt, or the full size studio I might be getting access to.

Who will use it: Me mostly, though with the family and friends I have there will be no shortage of guest designers.

What will get made the first week: Its own stand. I have been tossing around an idea for a nice stand to cradle it and allow for the longer items to be supported(got a pro).

Where it will live: In my office space, next to my 3D printer, die cutter and printers.

Who will use it: Just me, though Iā€™m sure my kids will get a kick out of watching it work

What will get made the first week: Iā€™ll be using the Glowforge to make many different things for my playing card business. I have a variety of designs for custom laser cut and engraved deck boxes, engraved display items from acrylic/wood and more. Years ago, I made a box like the one below for the custom card market and it basically friend peopleā€™s minds. It took nearly 4 years for someone else to try making a laser cut box, and once I get the GF I will be able to experiment freely and make a lot more stuff like this, which I CANNOT wait for. I have a deep backlog of products that I could be working on already, so visiting this forum everyday is basically pure torture.

I think add a fourth question: And what will get you through the long days and nights until your Glowforge arrives?

@toddloveswendy would you say more (or provide any online sources) about the safety of non-veg-tanned leather in lasers? Iā€™ve been looking online and havenā€™t found any comments besides yours, and I have a LOT of non-veg leather that Iā€™ve been hoarding for the day when I had a laser. I had thought the dye and other chems wouldnā€™t be any more concerning than paint on metal that will be etched, but Iā€™d REALLY like to hear any other information before I screw up my GF or lungs. THANKS!

@dan, do you have a perspective on thisā€“the safety of chrome-tanned, aldehyde-tanned, alum-tawed, synthetic-tanned, etc.? Iā€™d really like to know this and pass it to the group. Most upcycled and essentially all colorful fashion leathers will be in one of these categories, especially chrome-tanned.
