I have a quick question. I’m using some thicker materials for projects that go beyond the permitted thickness while using the crumb tray so I removed the crumb tray. When I did this, I noticed that the glowforge GREATLY reduces the amount of space I’m able to engrave on. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong?
The usable size of the bed is affected by your engrave speed, not by whether or not the honeycomb tray is removed. This is because the printhead must have room to slow down, stop and change directions at the beginning and end of every line of engraving. Reduce your speed and you will see the usable space increase. Your space is also affected by where you place your design. If you put it in the center of the bed you will maximize the space.
While removing the crumb tray increases the total distance your material can have, the distance from where the top of the crumb tray to ~0.5 inches above that is still in force. If the top of your material is less than 1.5 inches above the new lowest point then you will see what you are reporting (the fisheye lens cannot adapt) and it will not find anything to engrave (it cannot cut more than 0.5 inches anyway).
You must lift the top of the material to above where the top of the crumb tray would be with some sort of flat support like a stack of wood with the top of the stack ablative or aluminum foil or ?.
Old thread, but I can assure you removing the tray has nothing to do with the print area. I’ve done it many times. The only thing that affects print area is the engrave speed.
The target print surface has to simply be within the range stated to actually print effectively, and for the “set focus” function to work correctly.
