Registration/Snapmarks?

I recently dug my glowforge out of storage. Last time I used it regularly, snapmarks were a thing. I’m all setup and updated and don’t see snapmarks in the UI. Did they kill it? Are there any good options for registration marks and aligning projects or are we back to making custom jigs?

Welcome back! If you had Snapmarks they didn’t take them away from anyone, but yes, they killed that beta and released a significantly better calibrated head.
Run the Camera Calibration and you’ll likely get sub mm accuracy.

But you can still use snapmarks if you want to, someone who has them will have to see this and let you know how! It’s possible the menu only shows up when they’re detected.

If they didn’t get removed from your account during your hiatus they should show up behind the three dots pulldown.

The new calibration makes it where there is very few use cases where I need them but it good having them available.

I use snapmarks on my shot glass jigs. but then I was lucky and got them in the first place and they work.

Thanks. Great to hear that the camera calibration has been improved. Looking forward to burning some things.

I am also coming back here from a long time away. I had no idea that the existing camera calibration had been improved! @deirdrebeth, Assuming I turn on my machine and click your link to get the increased calibration? I also was still under the impression that I needed Snapmarks.

I have not redone things on the glowforge just because I didn’t want to make a new jig for something I had made before. Once the jig was removed from the bed, that was it. Snapmarks allowed those jigs to be reusable.

If you read the instructions it’ll give you all the details. It’s like a 30 minute process (or so).
You’ll need a 12x20 blank flat piece of material, but it doesn’t actually need to be PG. Folks have been successful with cardboard.

OH! I figured your link was the link to START the calibration. I’m no where near my machine right now so I didn’t want to inadvertently start something. I’ll click through and read up on it.

My machine is still the original one I received from the Crowdfunding waaaaay back at the beginning (8 years ago now? The ones with the Grey Bed). I didn’t think that it could be improved too much more than what it already is. Figured that I’d have to start replacing parts in order to get more updates.

Mine too! and nope, OTA updates FTW

If it hasn’t been on for a while, give it some time at startup to download updates too.

The new calibration makes positioning much more reliable (assuming you use Set Focus) but it’s still not as good as Snapmarks. And where Snapmarks really shine is in handling rotation, which is still hard to get right manually. :frowning:

They’re still there even if not in the current design (this is just a simple geometric backdrop for a yantra). This is on my replacement machine as well, that I got last year. I tested them and they worked as always, although I rarely used them anyway. Just reach out to support and I’m sure they’re re-enable them with a note that they are not supported.
