Hello. I was considering getting safety goggles to wear over my glasses as I do look into the machine while it is cutting. Is this necessary and if so what goggles are best to get I see so many out there and not sure if they will
Work for this particular laser. I have a pro if that matters.
Mike, the glass cover blocks the emissions. Don’t know which glowforge you have but if you have seen the new diode lasers the cover is orange. That blocks that wave length of light. The only hazards are if you have a pro machine with the slots for large panels and if you bypass the safety mechanism and cut with the lid open. The laser spot is bright but it shouldn’t damage your eyes. I just noticed that you said you have the pro so you should have received safety glasses with your machine.
They were only originally included with the Pro that has the pass-thru slots, but it would be virtually impossible to be exposed to the beam thru them.
The brightness of the beam on the surface can cause eye fatigue, but it won’t cause permanent damage. You could put on some dark sunglasses if it bothers you.
My eyes get more fatigued staring at the computer screen while designing files. My previous optometrist included blue light blocking on all glasses sold in his shop, so when i wear those, it does help, and now I’ve got dark mode on everything. Since i wear contacts most of the time, the glasses aren’t as useful as they should be
As others have stated, as long as the cover is intact, You don’t need extra eye protection ftom the laser.
I have a piece of dark red translucent acrylic that I use in lieu of sunglasses when I’m engraving slate - it throws off sparks that are really bright.
In addition to the other replies, you can access Laser Safety & LSO training through the Glowforge App. The drop-down menu in the upper right corner includes the link to that:
