I might think about defocusing it a bit. It would take a little bit of experimentation to get right, but should potentially help since it’s dispersing the energy over a slightly larger area.

I’ve printed your design on the units we have in the office. While the finish on the cuts is expected, if you try Draft or SD engrave you may find that the resulting finish is closer to what you’re looking for for this particular design.
