Have you seen other people’s slate projects? The one thing that I recall is that if you get oils on it your engrave will darken and maybe fade. So it is probably ornamental now, because cheese will ruin the engraving.
Yes, I have seen a couple of other peoples slate work. I put food grade mineral oil on it before and after I engraved it.

It did darken it some after I put more oil on after engraving.
That is pretty dark. Looks right where I’d expect oiled slate to be.
The issue with the oils is that they dry over time and the contrast fades. I sold one slate with the caveat that she’d probably need to reapply the oil.
