Spare parts cannot be shipped outside North-America

I live in the Netherlands, and we have one of the earliest Glowforges. We bought ours during the Kickstarter campaign and then had to wait years before it was finally delivered.

Fast-forward to today: we can no longer use our GF because an $8 part has broken, and Glowforge no longer ships spare parts outside North America.

At one point, Glowforge promised to set up a warehouse in Europe, but that never materialised. They did, however, manage to stop shipping outside North America.

I’ve already emailed several addresses/accounts at Glowforge.com, but unfortunately, they don’t seem particularly interested in replying.

So, how are other non-American Glowforge owners dealing with this? Is there any way to get replacement parts shipped to Europe?

It might come as a shock to some Americans, but there is actually a whole world outside North America. And Glowforge originally shipped their “printers” to customers all over the world, so why can’t those same customers buy spare parts when something breaks?

Any tips or experiences from other international owners would be greatly appreciated!

A few workarounds that I’ve seen people do:

  • Ask an American friend to order and ship it to you. There are a few helpful Americans here if you ask.
  • eBay.
  • 3d print it ($8? Must be something simple, maybe a good candidate)
  • Maybe wiregrass? No idea if they ship internationally.

There are probably other ideas but that’s where I’d start.

Trust me you wouldn’t want to pay their shipping charges anyway.

The company has gone through many changes since the original Kickstarter days.

You might find honey catches more flies, though.

Nope. xkcd: Flies

I’d be happy to help out if I can. Let me know what I can do for you.

No kidding they’ve changed!

I’ve tried honey with them in the past. If they reply at all, you only get sticky.

I meant with other people trying to help you, though…

None of the frustration from josephiena was directed at the community so I don’t see the need for the honey comment. She ended it with “Any tips or experiences from other international owners would be greatly appreciated!”

Her comments are factual and, to be honest, I experienced almost all of those myself from GF and I’m in the US. I can’t imagine the frustration level from anyone outside the US.

Probably the whole “it might come as a shock to some Americans” crack.

On the one hand, sure it’s a bit snarky, but on the other hand I dare any of us Americans to refute it. We all know multiple people who don’t really have much curiosity about the rest of the world.

Thanks all for your replies.
I’ve sent @craiger7 a dm. Hopefully, we can work something out.
