Still new so if this is not allowed feel free to let me know

Hi folks,

I am trying to create a file (my first) in InkScape and it is not working.

I have gotten to the point where it “looks” close to what I want, but I have done something wrong and I am no longer able to work with it by that I mean edit it.

The file is in no way earth shattering but it will be the first one I make, well attempt to make anyway.
I don’t mind paying for assistance if that is possible.
Also, I can’t explain exactly what I did to get to this point as I watched so many videos and tried to copy the steps. I did take an image (ChatGPT created what I asked for and I downloaded it) and imported it, then trace bitmap then it gets fuzzy and I am stuck. I will say it was looking like I was getting somewhere then… nope.
Thoughts??

Thank you!

I have a feeling that you saved the file as either a .jpg, .png or some other image file - you need to keep it as an .svg to continue editing it.

Please post updates so we can try to help!

Hi again,

Thank you for your patience. Here is the file. The goal was to have the ability to change the text and smooth out the line

I appreciate any advice.

thank you,

Can you provide more info? The file you uploaded here is an image. I’m not sure if that’s the actual file you are uploading to the Glowforge or if this is just a screenshot of it, though.

What are you trying to use the file for? Engraving would be different than cutting, for example.

Apologies, I tried to upload the file. Not sure why it is a screenshot. But, I dragged and dropped the file I will use the upload button this time.
What I am looking to do is cut this out but I want to be able to use the file over and change the text part.
Make sense?

I used the upload icon but it still came through as an image?? If anyone is aware of what I need to do please let me know.

thank you!! Sorry for the hassle…

After searching the forum I found this if you are willing to try it.

oh, I see… sorry - the way the file had such a huge random name, it didn’t seem like an svg file and I was reluctant to open it (my files all have names that I have manually entered).

I am not sure what you are trying to do with the file still, so I can’t really advise without knowing that detail.

When you put a file up, it will get renamed. They all do.

I want to be able to edit the text in the image.
I found this file (Chatgpt did)
infinity_symbol_template

I imported it into InkScape
used the trace bitmap feature to get just the outline and started to attempt to teach myself along with videos of what I was trying to do.
I was able to manipulate the image but at some point it locked so to speak. Now I can’t do anything with it.
I can start from scratch and keep trying to figure it out. I just wanted to try and use the community to see if someone knew what I may have done or could say " oh you just have to perform x y and or z"
As I mentioned many times on purpose this is brand new to me, not an ounce of experience just trying to have a hobby
I will say I am putting the effort in but with anything new sometimes you just get stuck and need to start over (and over and over) LOL
I appreciate the replies from all I just need to go back to the drawing board until I get it.

thank you

You would have to create other names and work them in. The SVG has nothing but lines. It could be “easily” done if you were advanced enough in inkscape but at this point there is no “text” but only vector lines.
I cleaned it up somewhat…

Thank you, I realize after a few more videos since my reply, someone actually addressed the text and nothing you can do about it as you stated without experience. Thankfully a hobby so I am not stressing over knowledge ramp up time and this may not be what I need to be working on at this point but thought I would try.
Again, really appreciate the replies!

If you knew the font you could make new text. Then you make that text into vectors, cut away the text that you don’t want and fit the new text into the space, and tie it in. If you did not think of it as text but just two different shapes that would be the way to do it.

I guess I was up past my bedtime. lol I swear I thought that it used to keep the filename for svgs.

Sorry… :face_with_spiral_eyes: :face_with_peeking_eye:

As I start over with the original I am going to try just that. I am not to concerned with the font as I am just trying to practice. I was hoping to create a gift in the process which is why I wanted to use this image.
Thank you for the advice!

I’m curious if the lock happened while you were in it, or if there’s a chance you saved it and then drag/dropped it back into Inkscape, because when you do that it creates a bitmap rather than opening the vector.

Any chance you’ve still got a different copy saved on your computer somewhere?

What I got was all vector and no image there at all. however if you upload an Svg all thar takes will be the vectors anyway.
