Strange sounds upon start up and lifting the lid of the Glowforge

Hi there!

I’ve enjoyed my Glowforge for several years now, but recently, it’s started making strange noises coming from somewhere unseen inside the mid to front left part of the forge. It occurs at startup and whenever I lift the lid. It sounds like a watery sucking or gurgling. I’m also noticing a lot of bubbles. More than usual. Has anyone dealt with this before?

It still seems to cut fine. No loss of power, but I’m not sure I should be using it at all.

Your coolant tank is low. It’s supposed to be a sealed system but you’re not the first to experience this.

The left-side top plate comes off easily, you can find directions here. Also someone had figured out what kind of coolant is mixed in there (or made a decent guess) but just a little distilled water should be sufficient.

You were right. The coolant was low. I bought Omtech Laser Coolant off Amazon and didn’t fill it to the top, but gave it a healthy splash. Turned the machine on. Bubbles gone and no more sucking noises. No problems with the machine so far, but I’m going to start a test print now to make sure it doesn’t malfunction.
