Funny you should mention that - I just picked up a collection of alcohol pens to play with colors on unfinished ply.

I like the vibe, Good job.
As to color, in my opinion it is easier to paint the material before with various layer colors, then mask and cut.
The pens can then be used to bring out specific details beyond what was engraved into the project.
