Can someone please tell me how to make my silhoette svg files not dotted lines so that the GF will cut them. When I save my silhoette file as an SVG file and upload it to GF, it won’t allow me to cut it.
I am not experienced with Silhoette, but it is my understanding that you need the Business Edition in order to generate files that the Glowforge can use. Are you using the Business Edition?
Do you own the .svg version of the content? Silhouette store content does that when it’s not licensed for use on the glowforge.
Yes, I have business edition. That is exactly why I bought it. But I just don’t know how to make those svg files cut.
I purchased the svg file from the silhoette store. Is that what you mean by “own”?
There are two kinds of files you can buy, Silhouette files (that only work in Silhouette studio) and .svg files. So if you have the .svg file you should be able to save it as an svg in Business Edition and print it.
From either the File menu, you would want to choose “Save as” then select SVG from format options, or from File, Save Selection > Save to hard drive.
I do save it as an svg file, but when I upload to GF, it doesn’t give me the option to cut. Only engrave.
OK, so you saved it as an svg but then uploaded it and it only offers engrave now? Is the dotted line problem better?
Can you double check your filetype in your operating system?
I think I’ve figured it out. I watched a youtube video that says you have to make a trace of the original design in the silhouette design space. So I did that. Now just waiting for my GF to finish a project so that I can see if it really worked.
Most, if not all, Silhouette store files are not meant to be used outside of Silhouette. It’s a licensing thing for designers, which is why it exports that way. There are work-arounds, but that’s a breach of the licensing agreement.
A different option is to see if the designers offer their files outside of the Silhouette store.
Exactly @ChristyM but the good news is most of the files offer SVG options now. As a designer myself I want to make sure other designers get their money.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to cut my svg files on the GF. I purchased these files from silhouette library, traced them, and changed the color of the lines like someone suggested and it still will not cut through. I have selected cut on the GF and my design is red, but it’s not cutting through the proofgrade material. I am so frustrated! That’s why I bought this machine!
Changing the line color to red does not change anything in the Glowforge interface. Different colors can be assigned different operations, but red is no more significant than green.
As for the file not cutting through, if you are using Proofgrade material with Proofgrade settings, the cut should work if your optics are clean, your fans are clean and the proofgrade material is flat against the honeycomb tray. Perhaps if you share a screenshot of your file along with the cut/engrave settings in the interface, someone could figure out what is going wrong.
Are you certain you purchased these files from the Silhouette Store with the SVG option selected? It’s more expensive. It sounds like you did not and that is why you’re having trouble. Having the Business Edition is not enough and just saving as an SVG is not the same as purchasing the correct files in the first place.
I’m pretty sure I’ve purchased these in svg. I have that box checked every time.
I am using proof grade material, and that’s why I don’t understand why it’s not cutting through. I’ll send you a screen shot of the settings and my cut/engrave.
Oh, so it’s cutting, but not all the way through? Have you cleaned your machine recently? That’s the most likely culprit. Also, make sure you’re pinning down your boards so they are perfectly flat.
